October 2023

Life is busy and time is precious. This monthly bulletin saves you time and effort by providing you with a range of resources relating to all things men and mindset.

Don’t just read the quotes. Instead, take a moment to consider them and hold them up against your life.

This month’s quote theme is: Self-Reflection.

Soft skills are what makes us human: awareness, empathy, adaptability, emotional intelligence, compassion and at the centre of these is self-reflection. Despite research suggesting the habit of self-reflection is a key performance driver, very few men sit with themselves and take an honest moment to think about what worked, what didn’t, what can be done, and what can’t. Self-reflection requires courage; it’s thoughtful and deliberate and to be at the top of your game, personally and professionally you must self-reflect. Take a moment to consider the quotes below:

Sit down, take a minute, read, reflect or journal on the prompts presented.

This month’s prompt theme is: Listening.

Listening is one of the most important skills we can have. How well we listen has a major impact on everything, from the quality of our relationships right through to our professional effectiveness. Chances are you think you’re a good listener; but the truth is, most people’s appraisal of their listening ability is off target. Most people don’t truly listen. Instead, they listen to respond, to fix or to demonstrate their own experience or knowledge.

Research suggests listening isn’t a passive activity, great listeners don’t just hold the space for others, they share their experience, they ask provoking questions, and they make suggestions. Consider the effectiveness of your listening by completing the prompts below:

Often, what stops me from listening better is…

The three people I need to listen to more in my life are…

If I stopped and listened to myself, what I’d hear myself saying would be…

This month’s podcast recommendation is: Modern Wisdom.

This month’s recommendation is a must-read for anyone who cares about their relationship: The 5 Love Languages.

Falling in love is easy, staying in love, that's the challenge. How can you keep your relationship fresh and growing amid the demands, conflicts, and intensity of everyday life? In this New York Times bestseller, you'll discover the secret that has transformed millions of relationships worldwide. Whether your relationship is flourishing or failing, Dr Gary Chapman's proven approach to showing and receiving love will help you experience deeper and richer levels of intimacy with your partner.

This month’s TED Talk is: 5 parenting tips for raising resilient, self-reliant kids.

With the school holidays in full flow, here’s an insightful and practical parenting Ted talk. How do you raise kids to step outside of their comfort zones and unlock their inner potential? It all starts with helping them develop a resilient mindset. Mother and business owner, Tameka Montgomery, makes the case for cultivating an entrepreneurial outlook at an early age and offers five strategies for emboldening young minds to embrace opportunities and solve their problems, no matter the path they choose.

A small group of 16 hardened and brave men ventured out into the bleakest of British Summers! We headed to the western fringes of the Brecon Beacons to visit Llyn Y fan Fawr and ascend Fan Brycheiniog via a steep, but fun gully.

8-ish miles of wind, drizzle and rain didn’t dampen our spirits; the conversation was quality and intimate. The talk topic of the walk was When are you at your best?

If you’re reading this but aren’t yet a member, please know you don’t have to physically join our walks to be a part of our community. We use a simple but effective app called Circle, it provides dedicated communication spaces for everything from general chat to walk information, to networking opportunities and areas of other interest: motorbikes, golf, surfing and cycling.

Sharing this again as I thoroughly believe it’s a powerful resource!

Without a doubt, the single best thing I’ve done (and am doing) this year for myself, my headspace, my sanity, and my ability to take a few minutes for myself each day is to join Shaun Doherty’s, 555 Club.

On the surface, it’s unbelievably simple. 5 minutes of breath work into 5 minutes of meditation (not the woo, woo kind) followed, lastly, by 5 minutes of gratitude or journalling, and all at convenient times throughout the day: 0745, 0845, 1145, 1645 and 1945, delivered live, over Zoom.

In a nutshell, the combination of accessibility, ease and impact of use, and super affordability, £12 per month, make being a member of 555 Club a complete no-brainer. I can’t recommend it enough; it feels like a thorough investment in myself, my well-being and my future.
